Port Forwarding and General Setup of DC++

Step 1:
Download DC++ from Sourceforge and install it on your computer.

Step 2:
Find DC++ on your start menu and run it. It should be in a folder called DC++ under all programs.

Step 3:
If this is the first time you have run DC++, you will automatically be taken to the setup window. Otherwise in the menu at the top of your screen click File. This will drop down another menu. Click the Settings.. option.

Step 4:
Fill out the personal information of this page. Use the Connection Type drop down box to select the type of connection you have. Now we are going to configure the Connection Settings section. Make sure there is a green dot in the Active radio button. Enter the external ip address of your router into the IP box. This is important you will not be able to connect without doing that. Your web browser is reporting that your external ip address is 38.107.191.91. Choose a port for DC++ to run on, and enter it into the Port box. If you want to use the standard default port enter 1412 into that box. This is the port you will have to forward to run DC++, so remember it. You need to forward the TCP and UDP protocols of the port you chose in your router. Do that after you complete this guide.

Step 5:
In the menu on the left hand side of your screen click the Downloads link.

Step 6:
The files you download using DC++ will go into a directory of your choosing. Enter that directory into the Default Download Directory box. You can browse to that directory by clicking the Browse button. When you are finished with that click the Sharing link on the left hand side of your screen.

Step 7:
We are going to add the directories with the files you want to share. Keep in mind that most DC++ hubs will not allow you connect without a certain amount of files shared. Click the Add Folder button to browse to the folder you want to share. You will probably need to change the Upload slots setting as well. The upload slots setting determines how many people can connect to you at one time. I would set this to 2 or higher.

That is pretty much it. Now you need to log into your router and forward the port you chose. Remember you need to forward both the TCP and UDP protocols. Take a look at our routers section for more information on forwarding ports for different types of routers.
