The first time you open up a new program, The Shield Firewall will pop up the following box. If you want to allow this program got communicate with the internet, simply click the Permit button. To prevent this program from sending data to and from the internet click the Block button. Now let's modify the settings of a program that you have been running a while. Go ahead and open up the The Shield firewall. Click the Control button on the left hand side of the screen. Click the Application link, so we can see the applications your the sheild firewall is currently monitoring. Find the application you want to modify settings for in the applications list and click it. Then click the Edit button at the bottom of the shield firewall window. If you want to allow this program to connect to the internet, set the Internet Access drop down box to Allow all traffic. Doing that will allow traffic in and out of your computer for that program. The Local Access Rule drop down box only pertains to traffic sent to and from other computers on your network. So if you want to connect to this program from another computer on your network, you should set that to Allow all traffic as well.The Sheild Firewall does not allow you restrict the ports that are availble to a program. Generally that would not matter. If the program became infected by a virus, then your computer would be at risk.
