To use the Slingbox outside of your local area network, you may need to forward ports through your router. This guide will show you how to do just that. The first thing you need to do is open the SlingPlayer Setup Wizard.

We are looking for the Remote Viewing page that is displayed above. Go ahead and complete the pages of the wizard until you find the above page. Make sure the Check this box to watch your Slingbox outside of your home network checkbox is checked. Then click the Next button at the bottom of the page.

You should now be on the Router Configuration page. Put a dot into the Manual (advanced) radio button. We are going to manually forward the ports on your router, so we do not need to use UPnP. Go ahead and click the Next button at the bottom of the page.

Now you should find yourself on the Manual Network Setup page. This page is asking for an IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Gateway. Go ahead and fill in these boxes now. Then click the Next button at the bottom of the page.

Now you should see the Port Settings page. This page has one Use port number box on it. You can use the default port of 5001, or you can change it to whatever port you want to use. This guide assumes that you used the default port of 5001. If you used some other port, you will need to take that into account as you follow the remainder of this guide. Once again click the Next button at the bottom of the page.

You should be looking at a window that displays the options you just setup. Go ahead and leave this window open and continue following this guide.

Open a web browser like Internet Explorer or Firefox. Enter the internal IP address of your router in the address bar of your browser. If you do not know your routers internal IP address please read our How To Find Your Routers IP Address guide.

In the picture above the address bar has http://www.google.com in it. Just replace all of that with the internal IP address of your router. By default the IP address should be set to 192.168.62.1.

You should see a box prompting you for your username and password. Enter your username and password now. By default the username is admin, and the password is password. Click the Ok button to log in to your router.

Please visit our Default Router Passwords page if the username and password shown above did not work for you.

This page lets you block traffic into and out of your router. We need to make sure that the ports you are forwarding are not shown on this page. Remember, I am showing you how to use the page so you can remove the ports you are forwarding from it. Your port forwarding configuration will not work if the ports you are forwarding are on this page. Make sure that a port range here does not contain the ports you are forwarding. I'm going to go over the boxes on this page. The Filtering Layer drop down box will generally be set to Port Filtering to filter ports. The Proto Num box will be grayed out, so we will not do anything with it. The Direction drop down allows you to select traffic coming into or going out of your network. The Private Port Range box will let you enter the ports to block. The lowest port number in the range should go into the box on the left. The highest port number in the range should go into the box on the right. If you only plan on blocking one port enter that port number into both of these boxes. Use the Protocol drop down box to select the port protocol of the blocked ports.

Click the Virtual Servers link near the top of the page.

Entry #1

We will list a series of lines here that will show you exactly how to forward the ports you need to forward. SlingBox requires you to forward the following ports: 5001. Go ahead and enter the settings shown above into the Virtual Servers menu.

Service Public IP Address Public Port Private Port Protocol Private IP Address
192.168.2.

When you're finished, click Apply near the bottom of the screen to save your changes.

And that's it! You're done!

Now that you have finished forwarding ports on your router, make sure you complete the slingbox setup wizard. Once the wizard has been completed your new slingbox settings should take affect.
