Port Triggering for the Allied Telesyn AR240E

What is Port Forwarding?
What is Port Triggering?

Open a web browser like internet explorer or Netscape.

Enter the ip address of your router in the address bar of your browser. In the picture above the address bar has http://www.google.com in it. Just replace all of that with the ip address of your router. By default the ip address should be set to http://192.168.1.1:8080.

You should see a box prompting you for your username and password. Enter your username and password now. By default the username is manager, and the password is friend. Click the Ok button to log in to your router.

In the menu on the left hand side of your screen, click the Security button.

Click the Dynamic Port Opening link on this page.

On this page click the New Dynamic Port Opening button.

You can think of the trigger ports as a light switch for the incoming ports. When there is data on the trigger ports, the incoming ports are on or forwarded. When there is no data on the trigger ports, the incoming ports are off or not forwarded.

Use the Protocol box to select the port protocol of the trigger port. If you are going to define a single trigger port, enter that trigger port into the Port Start Number and the Port End Number boxes. If you are going to define a range of trigger ports, enter the lowest port number in the range into the Port Start Number box. Then enter the highest port number in the range into the Port End Number box. Notice that there is not an incoming ports box. That means that when those trigger ports are active, every port is forwarded to that computer. Talk about a security risk. Set the Multiple Hosts drop down box to enable. The Maximum Inactivity Interval should be set to about 3000, though you can set it higher if it needs to be. The maximum inactivity interval is the number of miliseconds that the ports should be forwarded after the traffic has stopped on the trigger port. Session Chaining, UDP Session Chaining, and Address Replacement should all be enabled. The Address Translation Type box should be set to none.

You need to allow the ports through the firewall of your router, disable the firewall, or set the firewall setting to low depending upon which ports you want to be forwarded. Eventually a guide will be written on our firewalling page, detailing how to do this.

Click the Save Configuration link on the left hand side of your router. Use this page to save your routers settings. Then reboot your router for the new settings to take effect.

And that is it! You are done.
