What is Port Triggering?

Open a web browser like internet explorer or Netscape.

Enter the ip address of your router in the address bar of your browser. In the picture above the address bar has http://www.google.com in it. Just replace all of that with the ip address of your router. By default the ip address should be set to 192.168.2.1.

You should prompted for your password. Enter your password now. By default the password is blank. Click the Ok button to log in to your router.

On the left hand side you will see a series of four menus. In the one titled firewall click Application Gateways. This will bring you to the following menu.

The application gateways window gives you two selections to choose from. You can select a popular application from the drop down box, or you can manually enter the port triggering information specified by your software.

Click the Popular Applications drop down box to see the list of popular applications. If you see the one you want click it, and then click the Add button. You should see a new row of settings in the table below. If you are done configuring triggers then go ahead and click the Apply Changes button.

To setup port triggering manually, first you need to obtain the relevant port triggering information from the software manufacturer. Put the Trigger start port in the Trigger start port box. Enter the Trigger end port in the trigger end port box. If the start port and the end port are the same, just enter the same number in both boxes. Select the trigger type from the drop down box, if you are unsure just select both. Enter a list or range of public ports in the Public port box. A list looks like 500,502,560 while a range looks like 500-600. You can also specify a combination of lists and ranges 500,502,600-700. Go ahead and select the public protocol type from the Public type drop down box. Once again if you are unsure just select both. To enable this configuration click the Enable check box.

When you are done specifying port triggering configurations click apply to save your changes.

Well thats pretty much it.. You are done!
