The D-Link DIR-615 router has a basic firewall blocking connections to and from the Internet. This is done to protect your home network. Sometimes to play a certain game or run a certain application you need to unblock some of these connections. This process of opening a port is called a port forward because you are forwarding a port directly to a certain device on your home network.

To forward a port on the D-Link DIR-615 router you need to:

Step 1

It is important to setup a static ip address in the device that you are forwarding a port to. This ensures that your ports will remain open even after your device reboots.

This step is important because you want a permanent IP address in your device. If you do not set up a permanent IP address in your device, then when you device reboots it may get a new IP address.

Step 2

To login to the D-Link DIR-615 router you need to first open up your favorite web browser because the D-Link DIR-615 router uses a web interface. It doesn't matter what browser you use just pick your favorite. Some common options are: Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Internet Explorer.

Upon opening your web browser you need to locate the address bar. It looks something like this:

Above is an example of what a web browser address bar looks like. Find the address bar in your router and type in your router's IP address.

The default D-Link DIR-615 IP Address is: After entering the IP address click the Enter key on your keyboard. If everything went as it should have you will see the following page:

On this page you should be prompted to enter a username and password. Go ahead and do so.

Once you have entered the username and password click the Log In button to access the D-Link DIR-615 router setup pages.

Step 3

It is now time to find the port forwarding section of the router. To do that you need to start on the first page of the router:

First, click the ADVANCED option at the top of the page.

Then, click the PORT FORWARDING option in the left sidebar.

Step 4

Here are the ports to forward for Xbox Live:

Make sure that the Enable checkbox is checked.

Make up a name to put in the Name box. The name does not have any effect on the functionality of the forward, it's simply there so you can know why it was created.

In the Computer Name box to choose a device to forward ports to. This box contains a list of device names that are visible on your network.

These entries are protocol specific. If the ports you are forwarding need to be forwarded using the TCP protocol, you should enter those ports into the TCP section. If the ports you are forwarding need to be forwarded with the UDP protocol, you should enter those ports into the udp section.

Type the ports to forward into the TCP or UDP box.

Your ports can be entered as a list 23,24,25, a range 500-600, or a combination of both 23,45,500-600.

Use the Schedule dropdown box to select Always.

From the Inbound Filter dropdown box pick Allow All.

When you are finished, be sure to click the Save Settings button at the top of the page in order to apply all the changes you have made.

Test if Your Ports are Open

Now that you have finished forwarding the ports on the D-Link DIR-615 router you should test them to be sure they have been forwarded correctly.
