A D-Link DSL-224 router protects your home network by blocking unwanted incoming internet connections and acting as a basic firewall. Sometimes you need to open a port in your router in order to get a good connection for a game or to use a specific device on your network. The DSL-224 lets you choose the applications that are allowed to connect through an open port. By opening a port in your router you allow a specific application or game to send data from the internet to your home network.

To open a port in your D-Link DSL-224 router, follow these important steps:

  1. Set up a static IP address on the computer or device that you are forwarding ports to.
  2. Log in to your D-Link DSL-224 router.
  3. In your D-Link DSL-224 router, navigate to the Redirection de Port section.
    • Click the Avancee tab at the top of the screen.
    • Find the Redirection de Port tab located near the left of the screen and click it.
  4. Create a Redirection de Port entry.

If this sounds difficult, you are not alone. We will walk you through each step in opening a port for the D-Link DSL-224 router.

Step 1 - Setup A Static IP Address

It is important to set up a static IP address in the device that you are forwarding a port to. This ensures that your ports will remain open even after your device reboots.

After setting up a static ip address on your devices you need to login to your router.

Step 2 - Login To Your D-Link Router

Log in to your D-Link DSL-224 router. To log in you will need to use a web browser since the D-Link DSL-224 uses a web interface to access router configurations.

Open up whichever internet browser that you are comfortable with. If you are not sure which one to use, then go ahead and open Chrome, Firefox, or Edge.

To help with confusion, we have simplified this step for you with this link: Login to your DSL-224 Router

Once you have opened a web browser, find the address bar which is usually located at the top of the screen. The image below shows an example of this.

After typing your router's IP address into the address bar, make sure to click the enter button on your keyboard. You should see a box similar to the one shown below.

Step 4 - Create A Port Forward Entry

Opening a port to a specific device may solve problems that you are having on your network. Make sure that it is necessary though, before opening a port, because you are effectively creating a pinhole in the firewall portion of your router that could lead to malicious traffic on your network. The risk is exceedingly low, though, so don't let this warning stop you from making this change if you need it.

  1. Click on the radio button labeled Nom de service configurable. Then, in the Nom de service configurable box, type in a name for this forward. This will serve as a reminder to you in the future as to why this forward was set up, so give it a name that makes sense to you.

  2. In the Protocole dropdown box, select the protocol type of the ports you are forwarding. Choose Both if your router has that option. Otherwise, choose either TCP or UDP as needed. If you need to forward a port for both TCP and UDP and your router does not have the Both option, then you need to create two entries.

  3. Go ahead and leave Configuration du WAN on Interface, then select any from the Interface WAN drop-down box.

  4. The Port du WAN box accepts either a single number or a range of numbers. If you are forwarding a single port number then enter that port number into the Port du WAN box. If you are forwarding a range of ports such as 1000:2000 then you can enter the lowest number of that range into the Port du WAN box, followed by a colon, followed by the largest number.

  5. Enter the same values into the Port de reseau local ouvert box that you entered into the Port du WAN box.

  6. Enter the IP address that you are forwarding ports to into the Adresse IP du reseau local box. It is possible to forward a port to the IP address of your computer or to the IP address of a specific device on your internal network.

  7. Make sure to click the Add button at the bottom of the page to apply these changes, when you are completely finished.
