Forwarding ports in your router creates a path that allows data to get through your network firewall, and this could lead to malicious traffic on your network. So make sure that you must forward a port before actually doing so. However, the risk is very low, so do not let this warning stop you from making this change if you need to.

You should be on the Sharing for Device page for the device you're wanting to forward ports to. On this page, click on the button labeled New Sharing.

  1. Make sure there's a dot in the Port Sharing radio button.

  2. Select Other Application from the Application drop-down box. Then, type in a name for this forward in the Name box. Choose a name that will help you remember why this forward was set up since it does not affect the functionality of the forward.

  3. Select the protocol type of the ports that you are forwarding from the Protocol dropdown box. If your router has the option of Both, then go ahead and select that. Otherwise, select either TCP or UDP as needed. If you need to forward a port for both TCP and UDP, but your router does not have Both, then you will need to create two entries.

  4. Go ahead and enter the port number into the Port to device and the through Port boxes, to forward a single port. To forward a range of ports, enter the lowest number of that range into the Port to device box and then enter the highest number of that range into the through Port box.

  5. Enter the same values into the Port requested externally (IPv4) box that you entered into the Port to device box.

  6. Make sure there's a check in the Enable sharing checkbox, then click the button that says OK.
