Your KingType RT85A router protects your home network by limiting incoming connections from the internet. Sometimes it is necessary to unblock some of those connections like when you want to create a direct connection for gaming, use a specific application, or set up a new device on your network. This process is called forwarding or opening a port. In your KingType RT85A router you many need to open a port, which means assigning a port number or set of port numbers to a specific IP address. This routes the incoming data to the correct device on your network.

To open a port in your KingType RT85A router, follow these important steps:

  1. Go ahead and set up a static IP address on the computer or device that you are forwarding these ports to.
  2. Go ahead and log in to your KingType RT85A router.
  3. Find the Virtual Servers section in your KingType RT85A router.
    • Click the Application link, which is at the left of the screen.

Step 1

It is important to set up a static IP address in the device that you are forwarding a port to. This ensures that your ports will remain open even after your device reboots.

After setting up a static ip address on your devices you need to login to your router.

Step 2

In order to login to the KingType RT85A router you need to use a web browser. The KingType RT85A router uses what is called a web interface where you can access and control router settings.

Go ahead and open up your favorite web browser. If you don't have a favorite or are not sure what this means, open up Chrome, Firefox, or Edge.

If this step is confusing, we have simplified it for you with this link: Login to your RT85A Router

Find the address bar once you have opened up a web browser. This is usually located at the top of the page, like in the image below.

If the username and password that you typed in did not work, check out our Default KingType Router Passwords page for other ideas about possible passwords.

Step 4

Opening a port to a specific device may solve problems that you are having on your network. Make sure that it is necessary though, before opening a port, because you are effectively creating a pinhole in the firewall portion of your router that could lead to malicious traffic on your network. The risk is exceedingly low, though, so don't let this warning stop you from making this change if you need it.

  1. Select your internet connection from the WAN Name drop-down box. If there's more than one option and you're not sure which is correct, the WAN Status section of your router may give you an idea.

  2. Click on the radio button that says Custom Service. Then, make up a name to put in the Custom Service box. The name does not have any effect on the functionality of the forward; it's simply there so you can know why it was created.

  3. Enter the IP address that you are forwarding ports to into the Server IP Address box. It is possible to forward a port to the IP address of your computer or to the IP address of a specific device on your internal network.

  4. Enter the port number into the External Port Start and the External Port End boxes to forward a single port. If you are forwarding a range of ports, enter the lowest number of that range into the External Port Start box and then enter the highest number of that range into the External Port End box. Then take the values that you entered in the External Port Start box and put the exact same numbers in the Internal Port Start box.

  5. Use the Protocol dropdown box to select the protocol type of the ports you are forwarding. If your router has the option of Both, then choose that. Otherwise, choose either TCP or UDP as needed. If you need to forward a port for both TCP and UDP and your router does not have Both, then you have to create two entries.

  6. Remember to click the Apply/Save button at the bottom of the page to apply these changes when you are completely finished.

Test If Your Ports Are Open

Finally, I strongly recommend testing to see if you forwarded the KingType RT85A ports correctly. To do this you can use our Network Utilities tool, which includes a free Open Port Checker. Open Port Checker is the only online port checking tool that has Guaranteed Results.
