Your R7000 router helps to protect your network by blocking incoming internet connections. This is an important feature that helps you to control which applications have access to your network. Sometimes you want to allow network access to a specific application in order to play a game, connect a device, or use an app. The Netgear R7000 can unblock certain incoming connections through port forwarding or by opening a port. You can open ports in your R7000 by assigning specific ports to an IP address. Forwarding these ports directs incoming data to a specific device or application.

In order to open ports in your Netgear R7000 router, you need to:

  1. Set up a static IP address on the computer or device that you are forwarding ports to.
  2. Login to your Netgear R7000 router.
  3. Make your way to the Port Forwarding section of the Netgear R7000 router.
    • Find the NAT / QOS tab at the top of the screen and click it.
  4. Create a Port Forwarding entry.

Opening ports in a router can be a difficult process the first few times. Don't get discouraged! We will walk you through all the steps to open a port in the Netgear R7000 router.

We think that forwarding a port should be easy. That's why we created Network Utilities. Our software does everything that you need to forward a port.

When you use Network Utilities you get your port forwarded right now!

Step 1 - Setup A Static IP Address

If you want to ensure that your ports remain open even after your device reboots, set up a static IP address in the device that you are opening a port for.

After setting up a static ip address on your devices you need to login to your router.

Step 2 - Login To Your Netgear Router

The Netgear R7000 router uses a web interface to display router settings. In order to login to the Netgear R7000 router you need to use a web browser.

Open your favorite web browser. If you don't have a favorite or are not sure what this means, open up Chrome, Firefox, or Edge. If you are already in a browser window, go ahead and open up a new tab.

We have simplified this step for you with this link: Login to your R7000 Router

Find the address bar in your browser window. This is usually found at the top of the page, like in the image below.

Above is an example of what a web browser address bar looks like. Find the address bar in your web browser and type in your router's IP address.

The Netgear R7000 router's default IP address is: 192.168.1.1

Enter your router's IP address into the address bar of your browser and click the enter button on your keyboard. A box like the one below should appear.

Basic Authentication

Go ahead and enter the username and password for the Netgear R7000 router in the spaces available. Remember if you have changed them in the past, you need to enter those values.

Enter your username and password, and then click the Login button to log in to your Netgear R7000 router.

Netgear Usernames and Passwords

If the username or password did not work check out our Default Netgear Router Passwords page.

If you are unable to log in even after trying the above list of passwords you may need to consider a reset for your router. Our guide How to Reset a Router can help you with that. After resetting the Netgear R7000 router your username and password will be reverted back to factory defaults.

Step 3 - Find The Port Forwarding Section

You should be on your routers home page once you complete logging in. Find the Port Forwarding section on the home page of the Netgear R7000 router.

You should now be on a page that says Port Forwarding.

Step 4 - Create A Port Forward Entry

Make sure that you must open a port in your router before doing so since this will allow data to come through the firewall portion of your router to a specific device. It is possible that this could lead to malicious traffic on your network. However, don't let this warning stop you from making this change if you need it because the risk is very low.

Here are the ports to forward for Xbox Live:

  • TCP Ports: 3074
  • UDP Ports: 3074

If you are looking for the ports for a different application you can find it by either:

Forwarding a Single Port

  1. On the Port Forwarding tab, click on the button that says Add.

  2. Type in a name for this forward in the Application box. Choose a name that will help you remember why this forward was set up since it does not affect the functionality of the forward.

  3. Select the protocol type of the ports that you are forwarding from the Protocol dropdown box. If your router has the option of Both, then go ahead and select that. Otherwise, select either TCP or UDP as needed. If you need to forward a port for both TCP and UDP, but your router does not have Both, then you will need to create two entries.

  4. Enter the port to forward in to both the Port from and Port to boxes.

  5. Find the IP Address box and enter the IP address that you want ports forwarded to. This can be either the IP address of your computer or any other IP address for devices on your network that you want to forward ports for.

  6. Put a check in the Enable box.

  7. To apply these changes, remember to click the Save button at the bottom of the page when you are completely finished.

Forwarding a Port Range

  1. On the Port Range Forwarding tab, click on the button that says Add.

  2. Make up a name to put in the Application box. The name does not have any effect on the functionality of the forward; it's simply there so you can know why it was created.

  3. If you are forwarding a single port, enter that port number into the Start and the End boxes. If you are forwarding a range of ports, enter the lowest number of that range into the Start box. Then enter the highest number of that range into the End box.

  4. Use the Protocol dropdown box to select the protocol type of the ports you are forwarding. If your router has the option of Both, then choose that. Otherwise, choose either TCP or UDP as needed. If you need to forward a port for both TCP and UDP and your router does not have Both, then you have to create two entries.

  5. You need to enter the IP address that you are forwarding ports to into the IP Address box. This can be either the IP address of your computer or any other IP address on your network that you want ports forwarded to.

  6. Check Enable.

  7. Make sure to click the Save button at the bottom of the page to apply these changes, when you are completely finished.

Test If Your Ports Are Open

Finally, I strongly recommend testing to see if you forwarded the Netgear R7000 ports correctly. To do this you can use our Network Utilities tool, which includes a free Open Port Checker. Open Port Checker is the only online port checking tool that has Guaranteed Results.
