A SmartRG SR516ac router contains a basic firewall to help protect your home network. A Firewall blocks incoming connections by nature. Sometimes you need to unblock some of these connections so you can run a game or application. This is called opening a port or port forwarding. Port forwarding is literally forwarding a port from the internet to your home network.

In order to open ports in your SmartRG SR516ac router, you need to:

  1. Set up a static IP address on the computer or device that you are forwarding ports to.
  2. Go ahead and log in to your SmartRG SR516ac router.
  3. In your SmartRG SR516ac router, navigate to the Virtual Servers section.
    • Click on the Advanced Setup link at the left of the screen.
    • Click on NAT.
    • Click Virtual Servers.
  4. Go ahead and create a Virtual Servers entry.

Step 1 - Setup A Static IP Address

It is important to set up a static IP address in the device that you are forwarding a port to. This ensures that your ports remain forwarded even after a reboot, power outage, or another type of device or router disconnect.

After setting up a static ip address on your devices you need to login to your router.

Step 2 - Login To Your SmartRG Router

In order to login to the SmartRG SR516ac router you need to use a web browser. The SmartRG SR516ac router uses what is called a web interface where you can access and control router settings.

Go ahead and open up your favorite web browser. If you don't have a favorite or are not sure what this means, open up Chrome, Firefox, or Edge.

If this step is confusing, we have simplified it for you with this link: Login to your SR516ac Router

Find the address bar once you have opened up a web browser. This is usually located at the top of the page, like in the image below.

Step 4 - Create A Port Forward Entry

Opening a port to a specific device may solve problems that you are having on your network. Make sure that it is necessary though, before opening a port, because you are effectively creating a pinhole in the firewall portion of your router that could lead to malicious traffic on your network. The risk is exceedingly low, though, so don't let this warning stop you from making this change if you need it.

  1. If you have more than one interface, select the interface this is for in the Use Interface drop-down list.

  2. Click the radio button labeled Custom Service.

  3. In the Custom Service box, type in a name for this forward. This will serve as a reminder to you in the future as to why this forward was set up, so give it a name that makes sense to you.

  4. You need to enter the IP address that you are forwarding ports to into the Server IP Address box. This can be either the IP address of your computer or any other IP address on your network that you want ports forwarded to.

  5. Make the Enable selection in the Status drop-down list.

  6. Enter the port number into the External Port Start and the External Port End boxes to forward a single port. If you are forwarding a range of ports, enter the lowest number of that range into the External Port Start box and then enter the highest number of that range into the External Port End box.

  7. In the Protocol dropdown box, select the protocol type of the ports you are forwarding. Choose Both if your router has that option. Otherwise, choose either TCP or UDP as needed. If you need to forward a port for both TCP and UDP and your router does not have the Both option, then you need to create two entries.

  8. Enter the same values into the Internal Port Start box that you entered into the External Port Start box.

  9. Make sure to click the Apply/Save button at the bottom of the page to apply these changes, when you are completely finished.

Test If Your Ports Are Open

Finally, I strongly recommend testing to see if you forwarded the SmartRG SR516ac ports correctly. To do this you can use our Network Utilities tool, which includes a free Open Port Checker. Open Port Checker is the only online port checking tool that has Guaranteed Results.
