A Linksys WRT32X router protects your home network by blocking unwanted incoming internet connections and acting as a basic firewall. Sometimes you need to open a port in your router in order to get a good connection for a game or to use a specific device on your network. The WRT32X lets you choose the applications that are allowed to connect through an open port. By opening a port in your router you allow a specific application or game to send data from the internet to your home network.
Follow these steps to open a port in your Linksys WRT32X router:
- Go ahead and set up a static IP address on the computer or device that you are forwarding these ports to.
- Go ahead and log in to your Linksys WRT32X router.
- Find the Port Forwards section in your Linksys WRT32X router.
- Click on the Network menu, which is at the top of the screen.
- Click on Firewall.
- Find the Port Forwards tab located near the top of the screen and click on it.
- Go ahead and create a Port Forward entry.

After setting up a static ip address on your devices you need to login to your router.
Login To Your Linksys Router
Log in to the Linksys WRT32X router. To do this you need to use a web browser because the Linksys WRT32X router uses what is called a web interface.
It normally doesn't matter what web browser you use so go ahead and open up your favorite. If you don't have a favorite then open up Chrome, Firefox, or Edge.
If that is confusing to you, we have simplified this step with this link: Login to your WRT32X Router
Once you have opened up a browser window, find the address bar. This is usually at the top of the page like the image below shows.
Above is an example of what a web browser address bar looks like. Find the address bar in your web browser and type in your router's IP address.
The Linksys WRT32X router's default IP address is: 192.168.1.1
After typing your router's IP address into the address bar, make sure to click the enter button on your keyboard. You should see a box similar to the one shown below.
Enter the username and password for the Linksys WRT32X in the corresponding boxes. Important Note: If you have changed them in the past, you need to enter in those values.
- The default Linksys WRT32X Router Username is: root
- The default Linksys WRT32X Router Password is: admin
To log in to your Linksys WRT32X router, enter your username and password, and then click the Login button.
Linksys Username and Password Trouble
If the username and password that you typed in did not work, check out our Default Linksys Router Passwords page for other ideas about possible passwords.
If, after trying the above list of passwords you still can't log in, you may need to reset your router. Learn how to do that by reading our How to Reset a Router guide. After resetting the Linksys WRT32X router your username and password are reverted back to factory defaults. Router settings may also change when you reset, so make a note of your current router settings before you reset.
Find the Port Forwarding Section
You should be on the home page of your Linksys WRT32X router once you have successfully logged in. Find the Port Forwards section of your router.
- Find the Network menu located near the top of the screen and click it.
- Click Firewall.
- Click on the Port Forwards tab at the top of the screen.
You should now be on a page that says Firewall - Port Forwards.
Create A Port Forward
Forwarding ports in your router creates a path that allows data to get through your network firewall, and this could lead to malicious traffic on your network. So make sure that you must forward a port before actually doing so. However, the risk is very low, so do not let this warning stop you from making this change if you need to.
Here are the ports to forward for Xbox Live:
- TCP Ports: 3074
- UDP Ports: 3074
If you are looking for the ports for a different application you can find it by either:
- Browsing our List of Games
- Check out our our List of Games by Genre
- See our List of all Applications

-
In the Name box, type in a name for this forward. This will serve as a reminder to you in the future as to why this forward was set up, so give it a name that makes sense to you.
-
Use the Protocol dropdown box to select the protocol type of the ports you are forwarding. If your router has the option of Both, then choose that. Otherwise, choose either TCP or UDP as needed. If you need to forward a port for both TCP and UDP and your router does not have Both, then you have to create two entries.
-
Choose WAN from the External Zone drop-down box.
-
You can enter either a single number or a range of numbers in the External Port box. If you are forwarding a single port number, you can enter it into the External Port box. To forward a range of ports, you can enter the lowest number of that range into the External Port box, followed by a hyphen, followed by the largest number. An example would look like this: 1000-2000.
-
Make the LAN selection in the Internal Zone drop-down list.
-
Find the Internal IP Address box and enter the IP address that you want ports forwarded to. This can be either the IP address of your computer or any other IP address for devices on your network that you want to forward ports for.
-
Take the same values that you entered into the External Port box, and enter them into the Internal Port box.
-
To finish adding an entry, click on the button that says Add.
-
Make sure to click the Save & Apply button at the bottom of the page to apply these changes, when you are completely finished.
Test If Your Ports Are Open
Finally, I strongly recommend testing to see if you forwarded the Linksys WRT32X ports correctly. To do this you can use our Network Utilities tool, which includes a free Open Port Checker. Open Port Checker is the only online port checking tool that has Guaranteed Results.
