Your 5100 router helps to protect your network by blocking incoming internet connections. This is an important feature that helps you to control which applications have access to your network. Sometimes you want to allow network access to a specific application in order to play a game, connect a device, or use an app. The Netgate 5100 can unblock certain incoming connections through port forwarding or by opening a port. You can open ports in your 5100 by assigning specific ports to an IP address. Forwarding these ports directs incoming data to a specific device or application.
To open a port in your Netgate 5100 router, follow these important steps:
- Set up a static IP address on the computer or device that you are forwarding ports to.
- Login to your Netgate 5100 router.
- In your Netgate 5100 router, navigate to the Port Forward section.
- Find the Firewall tab at the top of the screen and click it.
- Click NAT.
- Go ahead and create a Port Forward entry.

Setup A Static IP Address
It is important to set up a static IP address in the device that you are forwarding a port to. This ensures that your ports remain forwarded even after a reboot, power outage, or another type of device or router disconnect.

After setting up a static ip address on your devices you need to login to your router.
Login To Your Netgate Router
Log in to the Netgate 5100 router. To do this you need to use a web browser because the Netgate 5100 router uses what is called a web interface.
It normally doesn't matter what web browser you use so go ahead and open up your favorite. If you don't have a favorite then open up Chrome, Firefox, or Edge.

Once you have opened up a browser window, find the address bar. This is usually at the top of the page like the image below shows.
Above is an example of what a web browser address bar looks like. Find the address bar in your web browser and type in your router's IP address.
The default IP address for the Netgate 5100 router is: 192.168.1.1
Once you have entered your router's IP address in the address bar go ahead and click the enter button on your keyboard. You should see a box like the one shown below.
Go ahead and enter the username and password for the Netgate 5100 router in the spaces available. Remember if you have changed them in the past, you need to enter those values.
- The default Netgate 5100 Router Username is: admin
- The default Netgate 5100 Router Password is: pfsense
Enter your username and password, and then click the Sign In button to log in to your Netgate 5100 router.

If, after trying the above list of passwords you still can't login you may need to consider a reset for your router. Learn how to do that by reading our How to Reset a Router guide. After resetting the Netgate 5100 router your username and password are reverted back to factory defaults.
Find the Port Forwarding Section
You should be on your routers home page once you complete logging in. Find the Port Forward section on the home page of the Netgate 5100 router.
- Click on the Firewall tab at the top of the screen.
- Click on NAT.
You are now on the Port Forward page.
Create A Port Forward
Forwarding ports in your router creates a path that allows data to get through your network firewall, and this could lead to malicious traffic on your network. So make sure that you must forward a port before actually doing so. However, the risk is very low, so do not let this warning stop you from making this change if you need to.
Here are the ports to forward for Xbox Live:
- TCP Ports: 3074
- UDP Ports: 3074

To start creating an entry, Click the button labeled Add.

Choose WAN from the Interface drop-down list.

Select IPv4 from the Address Family drop-down if this forward is for an IPv4 address, or select IPv6 if this is for an IPv6 address.

Use the Protocol dropdown box to select the protocol type of the ports you are forwarding. If your router has the option of Both, then choose that. Otherwise, choose either TCP or UDP as needed. If you need to forward a port for both TCP and UDP and your router does not have Both, then you have to create two entries.

In the Destination port range section, select Other from both the From port and To port drop-down boxes.

Still in the Destination port range section, Go ahead and enter the port number into the From port and the To port boxes, to forward a single port. To forward a range of ports, enter the lowest number of that range into the From port box and then enter the highest number of that range into the To port box.

Make the Single host selection in the Redirect target IP Type drop-down list.

In the Redirect target IP Address box, enter the IP address that you want ports forwarded to. This may be the IP address of your computer or the IP address of another device on your network that you want to forward ports to.

Make the Other selection in the Redirect target port drop-down list.

Take the values that you entered in the Destination port range From port box and put the exact same numbers in the Redirect target port Custom box.

In the Description box, type in a name for this forward. This will serve as a reminder to you in the future as to why this forward was set up, so give it a name that makes sense to you.

Make the Add associated filter rule selection in the Filter rule association drop-down list.

Click the Save button at the bottom of the page when you are completely finished to apply these changes.
