Introduction




Hi, welcome to Garry's mod walkhtrough! I will show you the basics in this game. Hope this walkthrough will help you. :) Click "Next Page" to continue.

1.0 - Start A Game




To start a game, click any of two selection which is "Start New Game" for creating single player game or host a game for local or public network. Or you can "Find Multiplayer Game" to play on game hosted by others.

2.0 - Game Modes




In Garry's Mod, there are many game modes. Latest Gmod comes with 2 game modes which is Sandbox and Trouble in Terrorist Town. You can select the game modes at the bottom right of the screen.

But in this walkthrough, only basic Sandbox game mode is covered. It's the main game mode for the Gmod and that's why people playing it. :)

3.0 - Gameplay




You can control this game like usual source game. Only this game doesn't have true goal. Only sky and the game engine are the limits. Eventhough the physics is still not perfect like real world, but it's far enough to enjoy the game.

4.0 - Spawning




To show the Gmod main spawn menu, press "Q".

4.1 - Spawning Items




At the left side list, it show the categories of the items. The more supported source game you have, the more items here. Browse through it and select which one you prefer.

The item always spawn at the crosshair position. For more keyboard shortcut, go to "Keyboard Shortcut" page.

4.2 - Spawning Weapon




For weapons, it doesn't spawn at the crosshair but instead, it automatically equipped to your character.

4.3 - Spawning Entities




Same as spawning items, spawning entities is something that useable. A function has been implemented to the items such as healing, suit power, etc.

4.4 - Spawning NPC




NPC is non-player character. It's controlled by the game itself using artificial intelligence engine in the game. Spawning a NPC usually will act as what they are programmed for. For example, spawning aliens will attack other NPC which assigned as enemy.

To change the options for the NPC, click at the NPCs menu at the left top. Change according to your needs.

4.5 - Spawning Vehicles




For vehicle, you can spawn it easily and even more interesting, you can use it as it the original game. Besides that, chairs is used to make your character sit.

Press "CTRL" key or control key to toggle to third person point of view. Pressing again will change to first person.

5.0 - Post-Processing




Post processing is an effect that happens live on-screen during gameplay. It's usually use for screenshot or video capture. Change its properties at the right side.

6.0 - Dupes




Dupes is a duplications items that has been saved by others or you. There are many choices of user made dupes on the internet. Simply select and click deploy. Then, a tool named Duplicator will appeared or else select from Tools menu. Just left-click to spawn.

6.1 - Saving Own Dupes - Save Custom Made Dupes




To save your created items to My Dupes. Simply select Duplicator tools.

Right click to the item.

Open Dupes menu and click Save Dupe. :)

7.0 - Saves




Saves is same as saving a game in any source game. It will load any items, npc, anything to the map during the time player saved it. To save your game, simply click "Save Game".

8.0 - Tools




In this section, I'll show you the basic functions of each Gmod special tools in the game (without addons tools of course). To learn more about addons tools, refer to the addon author. Only basic tools is covered here.

8.1 - Physics Gun




Physics gun is the main and important tools in Gmod. It's usage to move, rotate and freeze an object. Left click to select the object. Now, you can freely move the object anywhere.

When the object is selected (holding left-click). you can freeze the item by clicking right-click (without releasing left-click).

To unfreeze, simply select the item (left-click) or point the physics gun and press "R".

To rotate freely, select the item and press "E".

To rotate limited to the axis, press "SHIFT" + "E" during selecting an object. It'll rotate more precisely.

8.2 - Axis




Axis is a tool that make an axis point to the object. To use it, select any point at the object.

Then, the object shadow appeared. Now click again to attach the axis of the item to where you pointing.

Now, you've attached an item to the point you select. Now it can move freely on its axis.

The item will be spinning if some force act on it. Try to hit with a crowbar and see the action. For example. the axis is suitable for making a wheel or movable object.

8.3 - Ball Socket




Sometimes, people will be confused with this item. Just as its name, it will make a ball socket to the item.

Try to understand this picture. In the game, the first point you select is the ball part while the second point is the anchor part. [Image by: https://ode-wiki.org]

For example, click the first point where you want the ball socket is.

Then select the anchor part.

As you see in the picture, there's a distance between two point. In this case, the game automatically create invisible rod connect to the anchor at the bottom. Refer the example image before.

Now unfroze the object and use the physics gun. The object will always move freely at the point it anchored. Do it by yourself to fully understand it.

8.4 - Elastic




Elastic is just an a rope that has elastic ability. Like a rubber band or spring (can be enabled via setting).

To use it, first click at the object.

The attach it to something. You can do it in reverse step. Doesn't matter.

Now if you pull it, it will expand. When you let it go...

The rope will contract to becomes original length again. It's properties depends on how you setting it.

8.5 - Hydraulic




Hydraulic is a tool that act as an a thing that can expland and contract based on control (user control). In other word, it pushes the object and pull it back without any interruptions.

Before going any further, check the toggle key first. Select which key you prefer.

Select the first point.

And the second point. (accept any order)

When you press the toggle key, the item will go up. If pressed again, it will return to the original location (not the lowest). The distance is based on your setting.

8.6 - Motor




This tool almost same as Axis, the difference is you can move the object you attached to spin forward or backward.

First, point and click the object.

Then, attach it to some place.

Rotate the object using key you set in the settings.

8.7 - Muscle




Muscle is a tool that can push and pull the object continously. It maybe looks like a rope but the function is push and pull at certain distance and speed based on your setting.

First point an object.

Then set its location. Order may be reversed.

Now see the object being pushed forward and pull backwards.

You can toggle it on or off by using the key at the settings.

8.8 - Pulley




For pulley tool, it hard to describe here. See the example below.

Select the first object.

Click to the point it attached. Usually world or fixed object.

Again. Do the same for this point.. At different place or anywhere. Depends on you.

Lastly, click the second object.

It will looks like this for example.

Now, if you pull one of the object. The other one object will be pulled also.

Same as pushing. The other object will also be pushed. It actually based on the rope. It expand and contract simultaneously at the point you choose.

8.9 - Rope




Rope is a tool for create a rope to the object.

First, select the object.

Then place it to where you want it to attach.

It should be like this.

Now you can move freely the object by the length of rope.

If you try to move it beyond the length, the object won't move. To make it more flexible, use Elastic tool.

8.10 - Slider




Slider is a tool to make an object movable only at one axis (x-axis or y-axis depends on where you attach it).

First, click the first object.

Then, attach it somewhere else. Orders are reversable.

Now you've sliding object. In the example/picture, the object will only move in the x-axis.

You can only move it forward.

Or backward along x-axis.

Even trying moving it up with gravity gun will not change its position.

Same for moving it below.

8.11 - Weld




Weld is a tool to attach two or more objects/world together.

For basic welding, first click the first object.

Then click the second object.

Now the object are welded together. If you move using the Phy Gun, the object will be together even there's a distance between it.

For easy welding, first right-click a object (target object to weld)

Then right click the second place (a point where the object to attach)

Now move the object left/right according to your needs. Then right-click again to finalize the welding process.

Now the object are attached together.

8.12 - Winch




Winch is a tool to make a user-controlled length of rope. Set the key at the setting.

First, point an object.

The click on other place to attach it. It can be done vice-versa.

If you press the key for expand, the rope will be longer. The longer you press, the longer the rope.

Same as the contract key.

This rope also have elasticity properties but the properties can't be changed as much as Elastic tool.

8.13 - Balloons




Balloons is a tool for creating balloons at the crosshair position.

Just click anywhere you like.

The force will determine how many ballons you need to lift an object.

When the balloons have enough force, you'll be floating. =)

8.14 - Button




Button is a tool for creating button.

Set the key for activating the button

Then place it somewhere. Now you can activate it by using the key you assigned. But nothing happens right.

For some basic function of the button. For example, take dynamite and assigned the same key with the buttons.

Now, when you pressed the button...

Boom!! The dynamite exploded! :) For more advanced usage of function, you'll need addon (like Wiremod).

The only disadvantage of this basic button is user can trigger the object without using the button. So you'll need to learn more about advance technique through addon.

8.15 - Duplicator




Duplicator is a tool to duplicate your object.

Right-click an object to copy.

Then left-click to paste.

You can paste as many you wants.

Using duplicator, it will also copied any welded / attached object you select.

Moreover, you can save the copied object at the My Dupes. See page (6.0 - Dupes) for details.

8.16 - Dynamite




Dynamite is a tool for creating dynamite. Yeah as its name.

Set the setting at the "Q" menu and place it using left-click.

When you pres the key, it will exploded.

8.17 - Emitter




Emiiter is a tool to make an emitted effect.

Set the key and settings you wants.

Then place it.

Press the key and see the emitted effect.

8.18 - Hoverball




Hoverball is a tool for creating a ball that can hover. :P

Select the tool and set the settings.

Place it by left-click and use the keys to hover it up and down.

8.19 - Lamps




A tool for creating lamps.

Set the settings.

Left-click to place it.

8.20 - Light




Light tool is almost same as lamps. But it can automatically attached to something by rope.

For example like in the ceiling.

8.21 - No Collide




No Collide is a tool to make two objects which doesn't collide with each other.

First, select the first object.

Then the second object.

Now if you move one of the object. It will able to move through another. No collide.

8.22 - Physical Properties




This tool is use to change the physical properties of an object.

For example, change the object to "Super Ice".

Set to the object by left-click.

Now when you attack it with crowbar, the object will move like an ice. Less friction.

8.23 - Remover




Remover is a tool to remove object.

Left-click to remove an object.

8.24 - Thruster




Thruster is a tool to make a thruster. Usually, thurster is used to make a car or any movalbe objects.

First, set the keys and settings.

Place it to the object.

Now use the key to make it move forward or backwards. Place the thruster at the side of the object to make it turn.

8.25 - Wheel




Wheel is a tool to make a moving wheel. Wheel also can be used to make a car.

The method is same as thruster, just set the keys and settings.

Now place it by left-clicking and use the key to move it.

8.26-8.28 - Eye Poser - Face Poser - Finger Poser




To use this tool, you need to spawn a character or NPC.

Now, equip any of the poser tools.

As you can see, there're now settings here. Now close this menu.

Point crosshair at the place you want to change.

Press "C". You'll notice that the mouse cursor appeared.

Click his face for face poser, eye for eye poser and finger for finger poser. The settings menu will appeared.

Furthermore, you can right-click the object and see the few settings over there.

8.29 - Inflator




This tool can make part of the body of NPC / ragdoll bigger or smaller.

Right-click to decrease size.

Left-click to increase the size.

8.30 - Camera




Camera is a tool to make an external camera in the map.

Set the key and settings.

Left-click for static viewed camera while right-click for camera that always focusing you.

Press the key you assign to view the camera point-of-view.

8.31 - Colour




Just as its name. the colour tool is used to change object colour

Set the settings and click the object.

Right-click to change back to original colour.

Even NPC can be change the colour.

8.32 - Material




This tool is change the material texture. Almost same as colour tool, but it has its own texture.

Choose the texture you desire.

Click to the object.

Right-click to revert.

8.33 - Paint




This tool is used to paint.

Select the texture.

Then click left for fast or right for slow paint speed.

8.34 - Trails




Trails is one of the awesome tool. It can create trails almost at any object that moving.

First, set up the trails you wants.

Click the object to place where the trails will out. Right-click to clear.

Now move the object. You'll the awesomeness.

9.0 - Basic Gmod Keyboard Shortcut




"Q" - Gmod in-game menu/settings/spawnlist


"Z" - Undo

"C" - Another related in-game menu.

"V" - Toggle no clip. During this mode: Hold "SHIFT" to accelerate or "CTRL" to slow down.

10.0 - Building A Working Car (Example)




Spawn and freeze the object mid-air. This one I called main part.

Spawn wheels (non-functioning)

Use axis tool to attach the wheels to the main part.

Now, it'll be like this.

Now, use thruster tool to move the car. Place three. One for forward/backward, one for right and one for left. For the right, the key is always reversed (e.g. right thruster placed at right wheel -> key is left and vice versa).

Now place the chairs.

Use easy weld to attach is nicely. Tip: Right-click at the bottom of the chair.
