Port Forwarding on the Netgear DG814

Your Netgear DG814 v4.0 router has a very basic firewall that helps protect your home network from unwanted Internet access. The firewall works by blocking incoming and outgoing connections that are not authorized. Some of the online games and programs will run much smoother if you allow additional connections. To allow more connections you need to create a port forward.

In this guide we will be opening ports on the Netgear DG814 v4.0 router. We will show you:

  1. How to setup a static IP address on the device you plan on forwarding these ports to.
  2. How to login to the Netgear DG814 v4.0 router web interface.
  3. How to find the port forwarding page in the router's web interface.
  4. How to setup a port forward for the online game or program of your choice.

Step 1

It is important to setup a static ip address in the device that you are forwarding a port to. This ensures that your ports will remain open even after your device reboots.

TIP: Write this static IP address down. You need it in Step 4.

Step 2

Now we are going to login to your Netgear DG814 v4.0 router. Your router has a web interface, so you login to it using your web browser. This can be either Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, or Edge. It usually does not matter which browser you choose to use.

Open up your web browser and find the address bar. It should look something like this:

In the picture above the address bar has been circled for you. Simply replace what is in the address bar with the router's IP address. The router's IP address can be referred to as the computer's default gateway.

By default the IP address is set to:

After typing in the IP address of your router you can simply press enter. If all goes well you will see the following screen:

You should see a box prompting you for your username and password. If you do not, you need to make sure the router's IP address has been changed. To do this follow the directions on our How To Find Your Router's IP Address page.

  • The Default Netgear DG814 v4.0 Router Username is: admin
  • The Default Netgear DG814 v4.0 Router Password is: password

Enter your username and password, and then click the OK button to login to your Netgear DG814 v4.0 router.

Step 3

Now we need to find the port forwarding section in your router. Here's how you do it. Starting from the first page in your router:

Begin by clicking the Advanced option in the left sidebar.

In the new menu that appears, click the option of Server.

You are now on the correct page to make a port forward.

Step 4

Now we are ready to enter some data in your router. In order to show you exactly how to configure your router we need you to answer 2 questions:

Application :
IP Address :

(Be sure to use the Static IP address you created in Step 1 in the IP address box above.)

When you're finished, click Apply near the bottom of the screen to save your changes.

Test if Your Ports are Open

Now that you have forwarded ports on the Netgear DG814 v4.0 you should test to see if your ports are forwarded correctly.
