The Netgear WGR614 router has a firewall included that helps to protect your home network from any unwanted access from the Internet. A firewall by nature blocks all incoming connections unless otherwise specified. Sometimes it becomes necessary to open these connections because of a game or other application. This process is called creating an open port or port forward.
To open a port on the Netgear WGR614 router you need to:
These steps sound difficult but don't worry, I will walk you through each one.
We think that forwarding a port should be easy. That's why we created Network Utilities. Our software does everything that you need to forward a port.
When you use Network Utilities you get your port forwarded right now!
It is important to setup a static ip address in the device that you are forwarding a port to. This ensures that your ports will remain open even after your device reboots.
This second step is logging into your Netgear WGR614 router. This router uses a web interface, which means you need to login using a web browser. This web browser can be Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, or even Edge. It shouldn't matter what web browser you use.
After opening the web browser of your choice, locate the address bar. It should look like this:
The address bar is normally at the top of the page. Simply replace this with the Netgear WGR614 router's IP Address. Remember a router's IP Address is sometimes called the computer's default gateway.
By default the Netgear WGR614 router uses an IP address of: 192.168.1.1
Once you have finished entering the correct IP Address, simply press Enter on your keyboard. You should then see the following screen:
You should see a box asking you for the username and password.
Enter the username and password for your Netgear WGR614 router then click the OK button to access your router setup pages.
If the username and password did not work, we recommend trying other Netgear usernames and passwords. Check out our list of them on our Default Netgear Router Passwords page.
Are you still unable to login to the Netgear WGR614 router? It is possible you changed the username and password and forgot. It may be time to consider a reset. A reset reverts all settings back to how they were from the factory. Learn more about it in our How to Reset a Router Password guide.
Now that you are logged into the Netgear WGR614 router you need to navigate to the port forwarding section of the router. Let's start on the following page:
Click the Port Forwarding option in the left sidebar.
Now click the Add Custom Service link in the center section of the page.
You are now on the right page to enter some data into your router for a port forward. In order for us to show you exactly how to configure the Netgear WGR614 router you need to fill in the following 2 boxes:
(NOTE: The IP Address above should match the static IP Address you setup in Step 1)
Welcome to our router simulator. The following box or boxes will show you exactly what data you need to enter into your Netgear WGR614 router. Right now we are showing the ports for XBox Live.
Go ahead and copy the following information into your router as you see it here:
Don't forget to click Add button after each entry.
Congratulations! You did it.
After you have finished forwarding the ports on the Netgear WGR614 router you need to test them to see if they were forwarded correctly. To do this we recommend using our Network Utilities tool. This includes a Open Port Checker. This port checker is the only one online that has Guaranteed Results.
