Your Actiontec MI424WR Rev.D comes equipped with a basic firewall that helps to protect your home network from unwanted Internet access. However, there are times you want some of these connections unblocked. This is called opening a port or a port forward.

In this guide we will be walking you every step involved in opening a port for the Actiontec MI424WR Rev.D router.

We will show you how to:

  1. Setup a static IP Address on the device you want to forward these ports to.
  2. Login to your Actiontec MI424WR Rev.D router.
  3. Navigate to the port forwarding section.
    • Click the Firewall Settings button.
    • Click the Port Forwarding link.
  4. Create a port forward.

We think that forwarding a port should be easy. That's why we created Network Utilities. Our software does everything that you need to forward a port.

When you use Network Utilities you get your port forwarded right now!

Step 1

It is important to setup a static ip address in the device that you are forwarding a port to. This ensures that your ports will remain open even after your device reboots.

This step is important because you want a permanent IP address in your device. If you do not set up a permanent IP address in your device, then when you device reboots it may get a new IP address.

Use a VPN Instead

Have you considered using a VPN instead of forwarding a port? For most users, a VPN is a much simpler and more secure choice than forwarding a port.

NordVPN birthday deal!

We use and recommend NordVPN because not only is it the fastest VPN, it includes a new feature called Meshnet that makes forwarding a port no longer necessary for most applications. With NordVPN Meshnet, you can connect to your devices from anywhere in the world, completely secure, over a highly encrypted VPN tunnel.

Every time you click on one of our affiliate links, such as NordVPN, we get a little kickback for introducing you to the service. Think of us as your VPN wingman.

After opening the browser of your choice, find the address bar. It should be at the top of the page.

Having Trouble?

There are several possibilities why the router's default username and password didn't work. Here are three things you can try:

  1. Check out other Actiontec passwords, in case you have a slightly different firmware version of this router. Find a list of Default Actiontec Router Passwords here.
  2. If the above suggestion did not work then it probably because you changed the password in the past and have forgotten. If this is the case, why not try our Find Password App. It automates the process for you. Learn more about this on this page.
  3. If nothing else worked, then you may need to consider a reset. A reset like this one erases all personal data. Please do not reset your router until you try other troubleshooting methods. To learn how to reset a router read this How to Reset a Router guide.

Step 3

Now that you are logged into the router, you need to find the port forwarding section of the router. Let's start from the following page:
