Be very careful as you fight when boarding "Cattle" ship. They are filled with animals and if hit accidentally, they will group up with the existing pirates.
I can't stress this enough. On your beginning character, getting 10 VIT is VITAL, no pun intended. Here, I survive a danger 2 fight with bare 4 hp left on my character. If i didn't have that 1 armor, I'd be dead.
If you're low on cash and XP, scrounge every single ounce of resource enemy ships have, be it cattle or pots. Booty is everywhere, you just gotta look for it.
