The Netgear WNR2000 router has a basic firewall included that helps to protect your home network from any unwanted access from the Internet. This Firewall will block any incoming connections unless otherwise specified. There are some times where you need a connection unblocked for games or other applications. This process of unblocking a connection is either called opening a port or a port forward since you are forwarding a port directly to your home network.
In order to open a port to the Netgear WNR2000 router you must:
- Setup a static IP address on the device or computer you are forwarding ports to.
- Login to your Netgear WNR2000 router.
- Find your way to the port forwarding section.
- Click the Advanced button.
- Click on Advanced Setup.
- Click on Port Forwarding/Port Triggering.
- Click the Add Custom Service button.
- Enter the data to create a port forward.
These steps may seem difficult at first, but don't worry, we will be walking you through each and every one of them in order.
It is important to setup a static ip address in the device that you are forwarding a port to. This ensures that your ports will remain open even after your device reboots.

After setting up a static ip address on your devices you need to login to your router.
It is now time to login to the Netgear WNR2000 router. This router makes use of a web interface, which means you need to use a web browser to access the router setup pages. The web browser can either be Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer, or even Chrome. It should not matter what web browser you decide to use.
Simply open the web browser of your choice and look for the address bar. This looks like:

If you still are unable to login to the Netgear WNR2000 router it may be time to consider a router reset. This will erase all settings you have changed in the past. If this is something you think you need to do read our How to Reset a Router Password guide.
You should now be logged into the Netgear WNR2000 router. It is time to find the Port Forwarding section of the router. To do this, let's start on the following page of your router:
First, click the Advanced tab at the top of the page.
Then, the menu on the left will change. In this new menu find and open the link titled Advanced Setup.
Under that click the option of Port Forwarding/Port Triggering.
Make sure there is a dot in the Port Forwarding radio button near the top of the page.
Then lower down on the page click the button labeled Add Custom Service.
Here are the ports to forward for Xbox Live:
- TCP Ports: 3074
- UDP Ports: 3074
If you are looking for the ports for a different application you can find it by either:
Make up a name to put in the Service Name box. The name does not have any effect on the functionality of the forward, it's simply there so you can know why it was created.
In the Service Type box select the protocol that you want to forward these ports over.
If you are forwarding a range of ports separated by a hyphen then enter the lowest number of that range into the External Starting Port box and the highest number of that range into the External Ending Port box. If you are only forwarding a single port number then enter that number into both the External Starting Port and the External Ending Port boxes.
Make sure that the Use the same port range for Internal port checkbox is checked.
Enter the IP address that you want to forward these ports to in the Internal IP Address box. You can enter either the IP address of your computer or the IP address of another computer or device on your network.
After you are done click the Apply button.
That's it, you created an open port.
Test if Your Ports are Open
Now that you have finished forwarding ports on the Netgear WNR2000 router you need to test them to see if it was done correctly.
To check your forwarded ports we recommend using our Network Utilities tool, which includes a free Open Port Checker. This particular Open Port Checker is only one online that has Guaranteed Results.
