The Netgear WNR2000 router has a basic firewall included that helps to protect your home network from any unwanted access from the Internet. This Firewall will block any incoming connections unless otherwise specified. There are some times where you need a connection unblocked for games or other applications. This process of unblocking a connection is either called opening a port or a port forward since you are forwarding a port directly to your home network.

In order to open a port to the Netgear WNR2000 router you must:

  1. Setup a static IP address on the device or computer you are forwarding ports to.
  2. Login to your Netgear WNR2000 router.
  3. Find your way to the port forwarding section.
    • Click the Advanced button.
    • Click on Advanced Setup.
    • Click on Port Forwarding/Port Triggering.
    • Click the Add Custom Service button.
  4. Enter the data to create a port forward.

These steps may seem difficult at first, but don't worry, we will be walking you through each and every one of them in order.

We think that forwarding a port should be easy. That's why we created Network Utilities. Our software does everything that you need to forward a port.

When you use Network Utilities you get your port forwarded right now!

Step 1

It is important to setup a static ip address in the device that you are forwarding a port to. This ensures that your ports will remain open even after your device reboots.

This step is important because you want a permanent IP address in your device. If you do not set up a permanent IP address in your device, then when you device reboots it may get a new IP address.

Use a VPN Instead

Have you considered using a VPN instead of forwarding a port? For most users, a VPN is a much simpler and more secure choice than forwarding a port.

NordVPN is the fastest VPN!

We use and recommend NordVPN because not only is it the fastest VPN, it includes a new feature called Meshnet that makes forwarding a port no longer necessary for most applications. With NordVPN Meshnet, you can connect to your devices from anywhere in the world, completely secure, over a highly encrypted VPN tunnel.

Every time you click on one of our affiliate links, such as NordVPN, we get a little kickback for introducing you to the service. Think of us as your VPN wingman.

Step 2

It is now time to login to the Netgear WNR2000 router. This router makes use of a web interface, which means you need to use a web browser to access the router setup pages. The web browser can either be Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer, or even Chrome. It should not matter what web browser you decide to use.

Simply open the web browser of your choice and look for the address bar. This looks like:

Above is an example of what a web browser address bar looks like. Find the address bar in your router and type in your router's IP address.

The default Netgear WNR2000 IP Address is: 192.168.1.1

Once you have entered the router's IP Address or Computer's default gateway. If all goes as it should you will see the following screen:

Netgear WNR2000v4
Netgear WNR2000v4.

Do you see a box similar to the one above asking you for your username and password?

Go ahead and enter the username and password and click OK to login to your router.

Netgear Usernames and Passwords

If the username and password you tried did not work then we recommend trying other Netgear usernames and passwords. Check out our list of Default Netgear Router Passwords here.

If you still are unable to login to the Netgear WNR2000 router it may be time to consider a router reset. This will erase all settings you have changed in the past. If this is something you think you need to do read our How to Reset a Router Password guide.

Make up a name to put in the Service Name box. The name does not have any effect on the functionality of the forward, it's simply there so you can know why it was created.

In the Service Type box select the protocol that you want to forward these ports over.

If you are forwarding a range of ports separated by a hyphen then enter the lowest number of that range into the External Starting Port box and the highest number of that range into the External Ending Port box. If you are only forwarding a single port number then enter that number into both the External Starting Port and the External Ending Port boxes.

Make sure that the Use the same port range for Internal port checkbox is checked.

Enter the IP address that you want to forward these ports to in the Internal IP Address box. You can enter either the IP address of your computer or the IP address of another computer or device on your network.

After you are done click the Apply button.

That's it, you created an open port.
